Thrift Store Cowboys

I first heard the “Thrift Store Cowboys” on an All Songs Considered (NPR) podcast amongst a myriad of other bands. The first couple meandering seconds of Sidewalk Song immediately grabbed my attention. Wow, this sounds cool. Then, I heard the gorgeous and haunting voice of Amanda Shires. I’m thinking… Who is this? I want this album! So, I got it, "Lay Low While Crawling or Creeping." Great album!
Thrift Store CowboysMy ambiguous feeling of nostalgia was identified when I learned that the band hails from Lubbock, Texas. Of course, my college town! Yeah, that sounds right. Just like something from the "south plains" of West Texas. For some, the Thrift Store Cowboys' sound may be difficult to pinpoint with so many monikers and deviations of “country” music. The band, to me, is truly country. From the leisurely but deliberate beat to the peddle steal guitar, banjo and fiddle.

The Thrift Store Cowboys are completely independent. They do it all themselves and have no label to lean on. That’s why they're here. They make great music that needs to be heard! The band members were all born and raised in and around the Lubbock area. They’ve been making music for about seven years. Their most recent release is the aforementioned, "Lay Low While Crawling or Creeping." Lyrical, and vocal, duties are shared by Daniel Fluitt and Amanda Shires. Fluitt cites influences ranging from Pearl Jam to Bob Wills. The band will be heading back to the studio to record their fourth full length album soon. For now, there are several tracks on their myspace page to sample and enjoy.

Good work John. You'll need to visit Seattle and hit the local indie scene.
